AAP FACTCHECK – Australian-American actress Nicole Kidman has called for people to support Donald Trump ahead of the 2024 US election, social media posts claim.
This is false. The comments Kidman made about Trump are from shortly after his election victory in 2016. She has not endorsed or called for people to support Trump ahead of the 2024 election.
As the US presidential election draws closer, posts have appeared on Facebook claiming the famous actress had endorsed Trump.
"Nicole Kidman says it out loud!" one Facebook post is captioned, along with a screenshot of a Breitbart article headlined: "Nicole Kidman: 'We as a country need to support' Donald Trump."
The image of the article also shows contemporary page links concerning current issues such as Hurricane Milton and Hezbollah, making it appear contemporaneous.
However, while the Breitbart article is genuine, the screenshot has been cropped so as not to include the original 2017 publication date and any other context about Kidman's comments.
The actress later clarified the comments, which she made following the 2016 presidential election of Trump.
"I was trying to stress that I believe in democracy, and the American constitution," Kidman reportedly told Access Hollywood in January 2017. "It's that simple."
Kidman has not made any comments endorsing either Trump or Kamala Harris for the 2024 election.
She is not the only well-known name to be incorrectly linked to endorsements for presidential candidates.
As previously covered by AAP FactCheck, the likes of Elton John, Bill Murray and Taylor Swift have also all fallen victim to endorsement disinformation on social media.
